Beyond the Glass Ceiling

Career Connections and Support for Women

Ladies,

One of the goals I set for myself at our retreat was to interview all my friends who have masters degrees about their programs in order to decide where I want to go. So far, I've managed to have one face-to-face and I'm working on more. I wanted to send this question out to all of you as well.

I do want to stay in the DC area, but feel free to contribute comments about programs elsewhere so that I can compare the elements of various programs and see what sounds good. Here are the questions I'm posing:

-Name, location and type of program
-What did (do) you like about the program? What don't you like?
-What kind of flexibility do you have in your classes? Can you take classes of your choosing or is the schedule fairly set? Can you take off semesters if you need to?
-What was the cost of each class/credit? Roughly how much do you estimate you were spending per semester to attend, including books and everything else?
-How difficult was it to get in? What exams did you have to take (i.e. GRE, GMAT)?
-What was the learning and classroom environment like?
-What types of skills and knowledge does the program focus on?
-Is the program designed for working professionals or more of a full-time deal?
-Did you learn anything useful?

Thanks so much, any input is really helpful!

Hey Elisa,
I don't have any info on grad schools for you, but I did want to talk with you about your advocacy work. Would you email me at denait@hotmail.com? I'd love to get your advice on a couple matters regarding job-searching in the advocacy field. Thanks! Filmona (I couldn't find your email address, so I didn't know how else to contact you!)

Hello Elisa -
I've done a bit of research on nonprofit management programs. Is that the arena you're looking into? If so, you may want to look at this site: http://tltc.shu.edu/npo/

It lists programs by state. I can tell you a little about my program at Spertus College here in Chicago. I love that the classes vary in length from 3 weeks to 8 weeks, I'll spend the entire program with the same group of people - building a community, it's geared toward working professionals, so there's emphasis on practicality and I only take one class at a time. I don't like very much that transfer credit isn't allowed and I can't speed up my graduation if I want to. The schedule is set and if needed, you can take off a semester - I believe. The entire program is 14,500 including books, for the length of the program (not per year or per semester). There are NO entrance exams. I start next week so I can't really speak on your other questions. Good luck with your search!

Thanks for the info Natisha.
I am primarily looking at nonprofit management programs, but I'm open to other types of programs if they seem to fit more with my interests. I'll be honest that I haven't yet done much research into nonprofit management programs to see if they fit my interests already, but I'm getting there.

Natisha,
I am very interested in attending Spertus College for the non profit management program. Now that you've been in the program for at least a quarter, can you share your thoughts with me about your experiences thus far? Thank you in advance!

Sincerely,
Jacqueline (jgordon@robertmorris.edu)

Hi Jacqueline -
I'm now in my 3rd course - an effective writing course. The link for the courses is http://spertus.edu/degreeprograms/nonprofit/curriculum.php

Thus far, I can say that what I've enjoyed the most are the in class discussions and the fact that I am learning a LOT from my classmates. Their work experiences are not only in social services, but also in education, corporate healthcare and government.

What I've enjoyed the least are my last 2 writing courses. I can't speak for my entire class, but I know at least 2 to 3 other people feel as if the writing courses are a bit remedial but necessary I suppose for the large population of students who are 10+ years out of undergrad.

Check in with me in a few months and hopefully I'll have glowing reviews about those courses that are specifically geared toward the nonprofit sector - I'm REALLY looking forward to those. BTW, my first class was pretty informative (an overview of nonprofit orgs)
