Taking Time Off to Have Kids Won't Hurt Your Career

Penelope Trunk has a pretty interesting post on how taking time off to have kids actually won't hurt your career prospects, contrary to popular opinion. Her primary point is that the looming worker shortage is going to make access to...

Is It Time to Break Up With Your Boss?

It's been my experience that many women hold on to bad relationships for far longer than they should--and holding on to a bad boss is no exception. Most of us know when to walk out on an abusive boss, but...

Envisioning Your Future

At our career retreat last month, we did a lot of work with visuals. There's something about working with pictures that unleashes ideas and insights that aren't available to our verbal brains, in part because the "Judge" who tells us...

Preparing for your New Year

Like many people, this is the time of year when I start thinking about where I've been and where I'm going. Although it's partly because we're in that week between Christmas and the New Year, I think I also get...

Want to Increase Your Salary? Say "I'm Sorry"

An interesting tidbit via Christy Tucker--Apparently there's a direct correlation between your income and your willingness to apologize. According to a study published in Forbes:People earning over $100,000 a year are almost twice as likely to apologize after an argument...

About Me:
I am a freelance consultant who embarked on a career working for myself 10 years ago after staging a personal career retreat over a weekend. Since then, I've obtained certification as a Career Development Facilitator instructor and have used those skills to train and help others develop career and professional development plans. I also do consulting in workforce program development and the use of Web 2.0 tools for individual and organizational growth.

I'm a huge believer in personal learning and believe that we all have to control our own careers and professional development. We own our skills and talents and it's up to us to develop and use them.

My Career Story

About 10 years ago, I went through a "career crisis." I had two small children and was working a job that was OK, but not great. I decided to spend a weekend just focusing on what I wanted to do and what strengths I wanted to use and build upon. After two solid days of solitary work, I walked into my boss's office on Monday morning and quit my job.

After my career epiphany, I obtained certification as a Career Development Facilitator instructor and have used those skills to train and help others develop career and professional development plans. I also do consulting in workforce program development and the use of Web 2.0 tools for individual and organizational growth.

For the past 10 years, I've tried very hard to build a work life around my personal passions and talents. I have a successful freelance consulting business working for clients I like on projects that interest me and that make the most of my strengths. Not that I don't have bad days, but far fewer than I did before.

I still periodically re-visit my career plans and I'm in constant learning/professional development mode. I've realized that it's part of who I am and what I need to be happy.

Blogging has become a huge part of my own personal growth. Right now I'm blogging at The Bamboo Project, where I write about technology, learning and nonprofits and at Beyond the Glass Ceiling, where I'm indulging my passion for women and their professional development.

At 44, I'm still figuring out what I want to be when I grow up.

Hi Michele, I want to ask you some question about the glass ceiling. I attend Antonelli College in Jackson Mississippi, and i am doing a research paper on breaking the glass ceiling. I will also like to know what do you know and what do you think about the glass ceiling. Please email me back this will be useful for my research paper. Thanks!

We have. I had the great honor of interviewing the head of a fantastic children's theatre in Kansas City, The Coterie. She was wonderful and very willing to share her knowledge. My husband has a host of friends, co-workers and mentors that we are just starting to tap for ideas, suggestions, etc. I am very excited about the possibilities, particularly where outreach and educational efforts are concerned.

Thanks! I'm glad to be here. My husband is a theatre professional and we are working on doing a staged reading in the summer, but we are still trying to develop a business plan and drum up public support.

Hi Michele, Thanks so much for your follow-up. I'm really looking forward to the retreat on Saturday. Happy to share how I came to the ED position - though like most things in life it was a weird combination of preparation, ambition, luck and being in the right place at the right time. See you Saturday!

Hi Michele,

I am unsure if I am on the list, but I have a question about payment. How much is it? Also, where/how can I pay the fee? Finally, is there a carpooling list? I am leaving out of Baltimore and am more than willing to pay my share of gas!

Michele, before I said I might be able to make the retreat, but I won't be able to. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't on the list. Thanks!

This is an awesome idea and I hope there is still enough space for me at the retreat. Thank you for initiating this effort!
